The History

Before they were Demian, they were Texas legends Bubble Puppy.

Formed in the late 60s from the ashes of San Antonio garage bands The Bad Seeds and Zakary Thaks, the group originally found fame with the psych-rock hit Hot Smoke & Sasafrass. However, by 1970, the band was ready for a change. They moved to Los Angeles under the management of Nick St. Nicholas (of Steppenwolf), who rechristened them Demian after the 1919 Herman Hesse novel.

The Sound

Recorded live-in-studio at the Record Plant during a single midnight to six session, this 1971 album captures a band firing on all cylinders.

While traces of their psychedelic past remain, Demian is a pivot toward deadly, radio-ready hard rock. Think of the vocal harmonies of Moby Grape or Buffalo Springfield colliding with the heavy, dual-guitar attack of early hard rock. It is inventive, devoid of noodling, and focused entirely on the song.

Side One

• Face The Crowd: The lead single. A tuff riff with stereo-panned pick slides and power chords. It captures the anxiety of stage fright before shifting gears into a soaring, confident guitar break.

• Windy City: Shifts to a mid-tempo, jazzy minor key with articulated leads reminiscent of early Carlos Santana. Dark, dangerous, and atmospheric.

• Love People: An acoustic, folky respite. Heartfelt vocals about human connection that perfectly set the stage for the heaviness to follow.

• Coming: The storm after the calm. A savage hard rock track with fake prog intros and snarling lead guitar tradeoffs that would make Jimmy Page proud.

Side Two

• Todds Tune: Starts with a plaintive music will save your life message before veering into a heavy, downward-spiraling riff reminiscent of Ten Years After.

• No More Tenderness: Features a heavy, recurring riff and guitar breaks described as acid spiked with speed, reaching a devastating climax.

• Are You With Me Baby: Mid-tempo, brooding power. Interlocking rhythm guitars jag from left and right, creating a seamless wall of sound.

• Only A Loner: The album closer. Unites ZZ Top-style Texas boogie with jangly refrains. An anthem for loners riding through the night.
